It’s July 1, 2019. The 4th of July is just a few days away and it seems like it is a good time to talk about the freedom (or the dream of the freedom) that many people interested in a massage career dream about.
Several times a month, Bodymechanics School of Myotherapy & Massage holds free information sessions – where we discuss all things related to massage school, such as our curriculum, our tuition, and the job market. Many interested students have similar dreams as I did back in 2005 when I decided to go to massage school – the flexible schedule.
When I decided to go to massage school, I was an overworked IT Director handling 150 computers and 7 servers – in 10 offices in 2 states – by myself. I was so stressed I was taking between 10-12 ibuprofen everyday to deal with the headaches. I remember being on-call 24/7 – for 7 years.
I woke up one cold morning in January of 2004 and decided to run a marathon and to this day I am convinced that I made the decision to run a marathon as a way to save my life. My brother had died at 36 years old from a stroke; my mom died at 59 from lung cancer; and my older sister died at 39 years old from a head-on collision on the freeway.
I truly believed I would die before I was 40.
As part of my training, I got my first massage and it changed my life forever.
Over the months of training, my therapist talked to me about the career and the potential income potential. I was listening! I began to see a brighter future – one that would give me freedom over my life, and allow me to shake off the golden handcuffs that were holding me back.
I started massage school in 2005 and graduated in 2006. It was the hardest year of my life. I worked all day and went to evening massage school. I kept reminding myself of the end-goals: to be FREE; to live a life that allowed me the opportunity to expand and grow; and to earn at least what I was making as an IT Director.
Freedom is there for the taking
I have the ability to talk to a lot of people through different programs – from interested students, to students, to graduates, to peers, and to mentors. One thing is very clear – that the opportunity to reach for freedom is within all of us.
However, some never take the chance to change their lives and I’m always curious about that… But, that’s for another blog.
I’m really fascinated by the people, who like me, take a chance on finding their freedom and build their life around their hopes, dreams and goals. Freedom to choose is within all of us.
Moshe Dayan says “Freedom is the oxygen of the soul.”
Since quitting my IT Job, I have found a passion helping people and built my dreams around freedom, teaching and creating opportunities for others. I found my joy.
